Welcome to the School of Pharmacy!

The Diploma in Pharmacy programme began at the University of Guyana in the 1970s, being one of the first programmes offered by the Department of Health Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The diploma's nomenclature was then changed to the Associate Degree of Science in Pharmacy in the academic year 1993/1994 to accommodate the growing number of pharmacy curricula changes worldwide. These early programmes provided a formidable foundation for the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in the academic year 2010/2011, which is currently being offered.

The BSc. in Pharmacy is a comprehensive 4-year taught programme through a combination of rigorous didactic, laboratory sessions, and practical attachment at various pharmaceutical institutions. The scope that the pharmacy degree allows is large, and it is a highly competitive programme. It caters for a rounded pharmacist who can function with the relevant competencies and in several capacities, including manufacturing, distribution; hospital and community pharmacy; and our recent expansion in clinical pharmacy for focus on patient-centred care.

The didactic component includes courses that would cover foundation core courses - pharmacy calculations, dosage form design and pharmaceutics, basic and applied pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, natural products, pharmacotherapy, research, and clinical pharmacy.

Laboratory sessions are engaged to broaden the student's scope in chemistry, dosage form design and pharmaceutics, natural products and clinical pharmacy.

At the end of each academic year, there are immediate practice experiences where students are attached to various institutions depending on the theory covered to garner the necessary skill components, inclusive of manufacturing, drug distribution, community, regulatory and hospital (dispensary and clinical ward experience). These experiences prepare our graduates for internship, licensure and rewarding careers in pharmacy.

Our main aim is to train our graduates to be practice-ready in this dynamic profession of pharmacy. With the advent of Pharmaceutical Care and a pharmacist's involvement in the multidisciplinary team of health professionals, we strive to meet this transformed role of a pharmacist for future leaders in pharmacy practice.
