Ms Latoya Khemraj joined the University of Guyana, Faculty of Natural Sciences in 2014, where she initially worked as Clerk Typist in the Department of Computer Science. She was later promoted to the position of Personal Assistant to the Dean of the Faculty. Having worked at the University for the past five years, Ms Khemraj said she has learnt a lot during her work journey, some of the experiences were easy, others were quite challenging. In 2015, she worked under the stewardship of Dean Calvin Bernard, someone whom she describes as a mentor, “he was not only a supervisor, but a father figure and a teacher. During my years of work under Dean Bernard’s supervision, I learnt a lot about work ethic and academic life. I have adopted time management skills, techniques to problem solving and have become more self-confident”, she explained. Some of her duties include; providing secretarial and administrative support to the Dean, meeting and greeting visitors, organising meetings, scheduling appointments, attending to staff, student and general matters. She is currently being supervised by Dr Troy Thomas, newly elected Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, “I am open to learn and adopt new strategies and approach to work, I am willing to take on any challenge”, she said. “The Faculty of Natural Sciences is a home away from home for me, I met and worked along with many amazing people over the years and I am grateful for the experience”. Her work mantra is a Mark Anthony quote which says, “Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life.” She encourages colleagues, “Do not work just for the pay cheque, make someone smile, give someone a compliment, genuinely help someone, not a dime would be deducted from your salary.” Ms Latoya Khemraj is qualified with a Diploma in Secretarial Studies from Computer World and graduated from the University of Guyana with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology in 2018, she is currently persuing an Associate of Business Executive programme at The Business School adding to her academic portfolio.
