University of Guyana Hails the Historic Appointment of its first Envoy Extraordinaire Rt. Hon. UG RELEASE_Prof. David Lammy as British Foreign Secretary

The University of Guyana wishes to recognise the national and international significance of the appointment of the Rt. Hon. Prof David Lammyas Foreign Secretary in the newly- elected Keir Starmeradministration of the United Kingdom.

Throughout the years, The Rt. Hon. Professor David Lammyhas been a keen friend to the University, and within the last 5 years has served as the first Envoy Extraordinaire on the University of Guyana’s Council from 2019 to present.

University of Guyana Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed said: “The Rt. Hon. Professor David Lammyhas also been highly instrumental in various research endeavorswith the University particularly in the areas of sustainability and biodiversity. He has brought his keen dedication to education and human innovation. Of specific note he has brought his considerable legal prowess to matters of governance.”

University Chancellor Prof Edward Greene has also extended congratulations on behalf of the current UG Council. He said: “The University of Guyana has been distinctly honoured to have enjoyed Prof Lammy’sdistinguished presence and service to the academy.”

The entire University Community including students, faculty and staff, extend heartfelt congratulations to Foreign Secretary Lammy, the Hon. Prime Minister Keir Starmerand the entire new British Government within which he will creditably serve.

David Lammywas born on 19 July in 1972 in London, to Guyanese parents David and Rosalind Lammy. He and his four siblings were raised solely by his mother from age 12. He studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, graduating in Law. He was called to the bar of England and Wales in 1994 at Lincoln's Inn. Lammywent on to study at Harvard University, where he became the first black Briton to attend Harvard Law School where he studied for a Master of Laws Degree and graduated in 1997. He is a Visiting Professor of Practice at SOAS. He has served as Minister for Culture at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and also as Minister for Higher Education in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
