Several UG Berbice Campus Students Receive Awards at 20th Convocation Ceremonies

Tomeshwor Mohabir, 30 years old, of East Canje, Berbice, is basking in academic glory for being awarded the coveted prize of the Best Graduating Bachelor’s Degree Student of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC).
Mohabir, an educator by profession, completed the requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Secondary-Mathematics Concentration) with a perfect GPA of 4.0. In recognition of his excellent performance, he received that award from President Irfaan Ali during a simple ceremony held at the Office of the President on January 31, 2022.
Like many of his university colleagues, Mohabir experienced his fair share of challenges. “The two years had its fair shares of ups and downs, but I learnt a lot and the challenges mainly for me was time management, being a full-time husband, father, a full-time teacher and then having to deal with the UG work and so on,” the educator explained during a brief interview.
Mohabir is currently employed at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School as a TVET Teacher and has a strong interest in all things engineering. He is a strong advocate for the advancing of technical education in schools throughout Guyana.
Meanwhile, Marissa Foster, a UGBC graduate has been awarded The Council of the University Prize for the Graduating Student who has attained at least a pass with credit and made the greatest contribution to other areas of university activities. Marissa has completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Social Science (Social Work) with a 3.7 GPA.
The award recipient expressed thanks to her family, friends and the faculty and admin staff of the University for the support she received during the course of her studies. She also encouraged fellow students to stay the course and make the sacrifices necessary to be successful in the end

Several of the awardees expressed that they were forced to endure many hardships during their studies, but they were determined to stay the course and persevere.
“We are well aware of the sacrifices our families make for us every day so that we could acquire a university education and we were determined that we will not disappoint them. The obstacles were many, but we did our best and today we are proud,” said one of the awardees.
All of the awardees expressed gratitude to the faculty and administrative staff of the UGBC for providing the support they needed in order to come out on top. “We could not have done it without them,” said another award recipient.
OTHER OPEN PRIZES SPECIFIC TO UGBC
Ms. Alicia Mentore – The Prize for the Second-Best Graduating Student at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus – for the student who has completed a Bachelor’s Degree with the second-highest GPA. Alicia is graduating with a Bachelor of Education (Secondary-Mathematics Concentration). She achieved a 3.9 GPA.
Ms. Christine Roy – The Prize for the Best Graduating Student-for the student who has completed a Diploma/Certificate/Associate Degree with the highest GPA. Christine is graduating with a Diploma in Accountancy. She achieved a 3.9 GPA.
Ms. Rachel Peters – The Director UGBC Prize for the Best Graduating Student at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus – for the student who has completed a Bachelor’s Degree with at least a Pass with Credit and has made the greatest contribution in other areas of university activities at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus. Rachel is graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Management). She achieved a 3.8 GPA.
Dimitri Thom - The Prize for the Graduating Student in the Bachelor of Science Agriculture, other than the Best and Second-Best Graduating Students, who has attained the highest GPA. Dimitri achieved a 3.5 GPA.
Donnette Tappin - The Prize for the Graduating Student in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary-Administration), other than the Best and Second-Best Graduating Students, who has attained the highest GPA. Donette achieved a 3.7 GPA.
Leena Doodnauth - The Prize for the Graduating Student in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) other than the Best and Second-Best Graduating Students, who has attained the highest GPA. Leena achieved a 3.8 GPA.
Sunita Ceres - The Prize for the Graduating Student in the Bachelor of Education (Primary), other than the Best and Second-Best Graduating students, who has attained the highest GPA. Sunita achieved a 3.6 GPA.
Basmattie Singh - The Prize for the Best Graduating Student in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Social Studies), other than the Best and Second-Best Graduating Students, who has attained the highest GPA. Basmattie achieved a 3.4 GPA.
