MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Welcome to the Biology Department where we relate with each other as one big family. As it is with large families, those who hover at or around the periphery do not share in all of the excitement of the truly committed members. I urge you therefore to take full advantage of all the opportunities the Department affords you. As you journey with us, our dedicated faculty members are committed to provide you with the scaffolding you need to transform your dreams into reality. Some of what is required may be hard work, but with tenacity coupled with the willingness to learn, you can excel. “Good students are those who learn. Whatever their preconceptions, barriers or deficits—whatever their story—they take new information and new experiences, and to the best of their ability, make them tools for transforming themselves and their world…,” Cohan, 2009.

Many of the courses we offer afford you the opportunity to study biological systems in a near-pristine environment where the rich plant and animal diversity of Guyana can be explored. Our Department   collaborates with scientists from several organizations such as : the Iwokrama   Centre, Conservation International, Guyana Forestry Commission, Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society, Environmental Protection Agency, National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute, Guyana Rice Development Board, Guyana School of Agriculture, Demerara Distillers Limited, Banks DIH Ltd., Guyana Sugar Corporation, World Wildlife Fund, National Parks Commission, Flora & Fauna International, the Government Analyst Department, and the National Centre for Educational Resource Development.

Our revised curriculum offerings (Ethnobotany, Systems-thinking for Biology, Aquaculture, Horticulture, Climate change Biology, and Environmental Ethics, just to name a few) await you. Get on board now so that subsequently your contribution to your community, nation and the earth will be exceptional.
