About The Department of Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering is an important profession for any developing or developed country. The maintenance of modern lifestyles demands continuous planning, designing and construction of roads, bridges, highway networks and building infrastructures. The creativity and technical skills require to perform these tasks are entrenched in every Civil Engineer. They are laden with the responsibility for shaping their country’s infrastructure. The emphasis in Guyana and elsewhere in the world is to perform these engineering duties with great awareness of their impact on the environment.
The Civil Engineering programme has been strengthened and modified to include environmental courses that address the indigenous diversities of Guyana, while aligning with the needs of international accreditation bodies. It’s divided into a 2-year Associate of Science Degree (years 1 and 2) followed by a 2-year Bachelor of Science Degree (years 3-4) in which there are two options. The Associate of Science Degree provides courses that form the foundation of civil engineering whereas the Bachelor of Science Degree option offers more in-depth study with optional areas of concentration. The number of credit hours per course has been based on best practices in engineering programmes in other leading universities.
