Welcome to the Department of Law. The Department is the premier legal education provider in Guyana and currently offers one of the most coveted degrees at the University of Guyana- the LL.B. programme. This programme attracts a diversity of students and is facilitated by some of the most outstanding academics and practitioners in Guyana and the Caribbean.  Thus, the combination of being taught by both academics and practitioners enriches the learning experience of students and is one of the factors that contribute to the outstanding performance of our students at the Hugh Wooding Law School.

This is an exciting time in the history of the Department. The Department will soon expand its course offerings to offer an undergraduate Diploma in Legal Education specifically tailored for paralegals and criminal justice practitioners. We are also embarking on the development of courses in Oil and Gas Law because we believe that law is an imperative tool for national development and as such would play a critical role in the development of Guyana’s Oil and Gas industry.

The Department is committed to producing well rounded students and for this reason our students participate in sports, cultural activities, panel discussions and mooting, debating and impromptu speaking competitions. Further, in an effort to further enrich the learning experience and promote undergraduate research we plan to resuscitate the prestigious students’ journal “Before the Bar” and host our first Students’ Conference in the upcoming academic year. To the prospective and continuing students remember these words by Henry David Thoreau “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”
