ABOUT US
The University of Guyana History and Caribbean Studies Department is a dynamic department with two programmes; a History Programme and a Tourism Programme.
The Department of History offers both undergraduate and graduate studies. It offers an Associate Degree and an undergraduate major leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree, Double Major in History and another field, such as English or Geography and Pre– Law History. At the graduate level a Master of Arts degree is offered in Guyanese and West Indian History with emphasis on 19th & 20th century Guyanese history. The programme offers a spectrum of courses in national, regional and international history, and the opportunity to minor in an even wider range of complementary courses. It is the belief of the members of the department that,
“History is a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is a compass they use to find themselves on the map of human geography. It tells them where they are, but more importantly, what they must be.” - Dr. John Henrik Clarke
The Tourism Studies Programme is designed for those who intend to serve or advise, or are employed, in higher level positions in the Tourism Sector. It is also useful for those entrepreneurs who intend to invest in the Tourism sector, as well as administrators whose decisions and work impact upon the sector. The programme recognizes the special needs of the sector and the specific tourism product emphasis of Guyana and offers courses from a variety of disciplines in order to address those needs and develop the relevant skills.
