UG Gifted $2.3M From Republic Bank (Guyana) for Electrical Upgrades at its Education Lecture Theatre on the Turkeyen Campus

The University of Guyana on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, was gifted two million, three hundred and twenty-two thousand, six hundred and eighty dollars ($2, 322,680)  from the Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited to support the upgrade of the electricals in  its 35-year-old Education Lecture Theatre. Specifically, the funds will purchase and  pay for the installation of new electrical fixtures for the “ELT” as it is fondly called by  staff, students and alumni.  

University of Guyana’s Vice-Chancellor, XI, Prof. Paloma Mohamed Martin received  the cheque on behalf of the University from Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited’s new, Managing Director, Mr. Stephen Grell at the University’s Turkeyen campus.  

Also, representing Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited were: Ms. Jonelle Dummett,  Brand Specialist and Mrs. Rachel Singh, Brand Official-Advertising and Production,  as well as Ms. Christine Chowargir and Ms. Trovana Azeez, Senior managing officers  in PACE who negotiated the gift.  

The University of Guyana, now in its 58th year is striding towards its 60th anniversary in October 2023. Amongst its targets for the special occasion is the  extension and refurbishment of 30 older buildings on its campuses, to modernize,  expand them to support more students, adapt for students with disabilities, support less crowding as well as to make all buildings climate-friendly in accordance with  the University's Charter for the Preservation of Planet Earth (CPPE).  

A chief beneficiary of UG graduates, Republic Bank had been the original donor of the  Education Lecture Theatre and has been a strong continual partner of the University  on several projects including sponsorship of prizes for graduation, supporting student  projects, internship placements, and the preparation of students for the world of work  through popular and highly successful Career Coach series.
