The Procurement Department falls under the Projects Planning, Procurement, Monitoring and Management Unit (PPPMMU). The Procurement Department is responsible for administering procurement for all departments in accordance with the responsibility and authority delegated by the University of Guyana Procurement Guidelines and Procurement Manual. The Procurement Unit has responsibility for planning and executing UG's procurement programme.

Guiding Principles of Procurement Activities of the University of Guyana 

The preceding principles require that: 

• Goods, works, and services of the highest quality are procured at the best possible price; 
• Procurement activities conform with the procurement plan of the University and completed within standard-time guidelines; 
• Goods, works, and services are procured by utilizing the method that allows for the greatest participation of suppliers/contractors; 
• Suppliers and contractors are selected based on the established evaluation criteria;
• Contracts are awarded to the lowest responsive bidder; that is the bidder who satisfies all the evaluation criteria and submits the lowest priced bid; 
• Suppliers/contractors are provided with information regarding procurement opportunities at the University at all time, and those engaged have access to information at every stage of the procurement process; and 
• Suppliers and contractors are confident that the University's procurement system is fair, transparent, and equitable.

Methods of Selection

Contracts shall be awarded on the basis of competitive tendering. The purpose is to ensure the procurement procedure is in accordance with the principles and standards governing public procurement and to obtain quality goods, equipment, services, and works at the best possible price.
